Critical Clash to Secure Finals Ticket

Critical Clash to Secure Finals Ticket

July 20, 2020
The Tiger Brokers Tigers have secured their spot in the grand final.

The final round of the LearnCoach New Zealand Badminton League hits the court this week, with teams aiming to qualify for the next week's Grand Final. The victorious team will claim the Willans and Wong Presidents’ Cup and a lion's share of the league's $15,000 prize pool.

First up on Tuesday night, the Huawei Dragons face an uphill battle against top-of-the-table Tiger Brokers Tigers. The Tigers have already secured their place in the grand final next week, while the Dragons will be searching for a win to avoid the wooden spoon. The tie presents some mouth-watering match-ups, in particular the women’s singles clash between the undefeated Sally Fu and the emerging force of Shaunna Li.

Wednesday night’s tie concludes the round robin stage of the LearnCoach New Zealand Badminton League, with a critical clash between the Heytour Hawks and the OnePure Wolves. The match promises high stakes, plenty of tension and unbeatable excitement, with the outcome determining who will face the Tiger Brokers Tigers in the Grand Final next week. The Wolves require an outright win (of 4 matches or more) to punch their ticket to the final, while a 3-3 draw will be enough to see the Hawks through, regardless of the golden game result.

The OnePure Wolves will have a battle on their hands as they take on the HeyTour Hawks for the remaining finals spot.

As the NZBL heads towards it’s final week, the Crystal Ashley MVP race is also heating up. Tiger Brokers Tigers’ stars, Edward Lau and Dacmen Vong, sit at the top of the table following five weeks of consistently standout performances. However, it all comes down to the last round, as young guns; Shaunna Li (Dragons) and Roanne Apalisok (Wolves), and the experienced campaigners; Anona Pak (Wolves), Oliver Leydon-Davis (Wolves) and Abhinav Manota (Hawks) remain in the hunt.

It’s a big week of high stakes action, so tune in from 7pm Tuesday 21st July and 7pm Wednesday 22nd July on SKY Sport 9 and SKY Sport Next, or catch the action live at the Waitakere Badminton Centre. Doors open at 6:45pm and entry is free.
